CSS
CSS stands for Central Superior Service. This is considered the most prestigious service in Pakistan. CSS Exam is conducted by the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) for the recruitment of candidates to the post (BS-17) under the Federal Government of Pakistan. Through this exam, the most intellectual, professional, and disciplined candidates are selected for civil bureaucracy.
This exam is conducted each year, but due to prevalent unequal educational standards along with substandard bachelor programs, most of the aspirants fail each year. It is a dream job for the youth in Pakistan, but it requires perseverance, dedication, and sheer hard work.

It is important for contenders to know and understand the requirements of the CSS exam 2023 such as the FPSC syllabus for the CSS Exam (Prelims and Mains), pattern, eligibility criteria, application procedure, and other such significant details before kick-starting the preparations. Screening Test / MCQ-Based Preliminary Test (MPT)
The Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) has announced to take the Screening Test from CSS 2022 onwards. The FPSC said that from CSS 2022 they will hold a Screening Test to scrutinize the serious candidate for the CSS. The FPSC also announced the Syllabus for Screening Test from CSS 2022.
Eligibility for CSS Screening Test / MCQ-Based Preliminary Test (MPT)
All graduates having at least 2nd Division in bachelor’s degree and between the age of 21 to 30 years on the cut-off date of 31st December 2021 are eligible to apply.
Two Years of age relaxation is admissible to the categories specified in CSS Rules 2019 under section 6 sub-section 2 of these Rules.
Main Written Exam
1. The written exam comprises twelve (12) papers. Out of which six (6) are compulsory papers and the remaining six (6) are optional papers. Each paper has 100 marks.
2. The written exam carries 1200 marks in total. Out of which, 600 marks are for compulsory papers and 600 marks are for optional papers.
3. Time allowed for each paper is 3 Hours.
4. Each paper has Part-I (Objective part) and Part II (Subjective part). Part-I is attempted on a separate sheet which is collected back after 30 minutes.
5. Qualifying marks for the compulsory paper is 40% and for the optional paper is 33%.
6. Optional papers are to be selected from the groups of subjects in the list according to the rules specified for them by FPSC.

Note:
- A subject carrying 100 marks has one paper. On the other hand, a subject carrying 200 marks has two papers.
- Question papers in Urdu or other regional languages (i.e. Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi, or Balochi), Arabic and Persian must be answered in the respective languages. However, translation question (from respective language to English) in the same papers must be answered as directed in the question.
- There will be 20 MCQs in all compulsory papers except the paper of Essay. There will be 20 MCQs in all optional papers except paper of Applied Mathematics and Pure Mathematics.
Qualifying Marks for Written Exam
- A candidate who fails to secure at least 40% marks in any of the compulsory subjects, 33% marks in any of the optional subjects and 50% marks in the aggregate shall be considered to have failed in written examination and shall not be eligible for medical examination, psychological assessment and viva voce.
- Only the candidates declared qualified in the written examination and found eligible shall be called for subsequent medical examination, psychological assessment, and viva voce.
Age for CSS Examination
The minimum age for appearing in the CSS Examination is 21 years and the maximum age is 30 years.
The age is calculated on 31 December of the year. Suppose you are applying in CSS 2024 then on 31 December 2023 you must not be 31 years of age or more. Two years of age relaxation is available which you can read in the Age relaxation criteria below.
Eligibility Criteria for CSS
You must fulfill the following eligibility criteria for appearing in CSS Examination.
Nationality Criteria: You must be a citizen of Pakistan or a permanent resident of the state of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Educational Criteria for CSS
According to CSS Rules and Regulations for CSS Examination 2022:
- You must have a minimum bachelor’s degree with at least 2nd division from a university of Pakistan or an equivalent qualification from a foreign university recognized by HEC.
- If you have the 3rd division in your bachelor’s degree, then you can only apply if you have a higher division in your master’s degree.
